BEAR

BEAR sits slap-bang in the centre of Derby’s iconic and beautiful Cathedral Quarter; the original hotspot for high-quality food but most of all coffees.

There’s plenty to choose from - espresso, long black, filter, flat white, latte, cappuccino, mocha, chai latte, as well the usual teas or a lovely hot chocolate. You can also subscribe online and get sustainably sourced coffee beans delivered to your doorstep. Check it out here.

The Café itself was originally a bank, but it’s now a lovely rustic-industrial spot to sit and enjoy a coffee at!

The Book Café

The Book Café is situated in the bustling Cornmarket, it’s a beautiful Grade 2 listed building, originally built as a bank in 1879. So a pleasant historic interior which is the perfect spot to people watch whilst grabbing a delightful coffee. It’s also pet friendly.

BEAN Caffé

The BEAN Caffé is a contemporary café space based just off Friar Gate in the Connect Derby ran Friar Gate Studio’s.

Looking for somewhere nice for a spot of lunch in Derby City Centre?

Here are our top three recommendations:

The BookCafe

For the past decade, the Bookcafe has occupied what was once a bank. It’s a lovely historic setting that that emphasises comfort food and friendly service.
I would recommend trying some of the savoury dishes - such as the pulled pork bao buns or baked sweet potato with homemade harissa spiced mixed beans, yum! Or if you have more of a sweet tooth you must try the pancakes. Their dishes are freshly made and quite often locally sourced.

Hide Burger Bar

Their goal is to serve the best British Burger in Derby – and I think they’ve achieved that goal! There’s plenty on the menu but the focus is definitely perfect burgers. The pattys are made from 100% freshly ground Derbyshire beef, and served in a brioche bun, because that is how it should be!

HIDE Burger Bar is based in Derby’s converted Magistrates Court, now named Riverside Chambers.

The Blacksmiths Lounge

Why not check out The Blacksmiths Lounge in Sadler Gate, Derby City Centre. A perfect venue if you want a cheeky lunchtime glass of wine or cocktail with a delicious charcuterie board! It certainly is a lovely British-European style bistro with a buzzy atmosphere.

If you fancy a later lunch on a Saturday or Sunday, this venue is ideal as there’s often live music across the weekends, as well as some amazing cocktails!

Oh and don’t forget to check out our blog on the Top 5 Local Pubs to visit in Derby!

Going into the New Year many of us have found ourselves now working from home permanently. This lifestyle change has been an easy adaptation for some but not for others, as there’s a variety of new problems to tackle in order to complete your work, and I’m not just talking about the Wi-Fi going down!

We’ve created a list of things that could be contributing to your work stress and some tips to help reduce it.

Focusing on tasks

One of the biggest hurdles to overcome during work is to focus on tasks and this becomes even more difficult at home as we are surrounded by things that can distract us. Being at home can make it very tempting to distract ourselves with other small tasks or the biggest distraction, going on our phones. Not to mention it’s easy to get distracted by laundry piling up or clutter that needs tidying up.

Our Recommendation:

Moving your phone to a different room or turning it on to airplane mode can help with being distracted by social media or any incoming messages and giving yourself a few rules to follow such as taking scheduled breaks, having set tasks to finish by the end of the day and leaving household chores until after working hours. This can also help to ensure that your surroundings are free from anything or any task that can distract you the next working day.

Focusing on tasks

Detaching from work

A problem that many of us have struggled with is switching off at the end of the work day and relaxing. Working from home means that your living space is now your office space, which can be a big problem if you have a limited amount of space, meaning it can be hard to feel like you have finished work for the day or can leave your work behind. This can contribute to being able to leave a work mindset.

Our Recommendation:

This YouTube video shows how to optimise small or limited space whilst working from home to make them feel as separated as possible. When you have finished working, having an activity or hobby to do after can also help channel your thoughts into something else. Going outside can also help to detach from work e.g. reading a book in the garden or going for a run (British weather permitting of course)!

Detaching from work

Feeling Accomplished

Feeling accomplished can be difficult when completing one task after another or when feeling overwhelmed. Working from home means plenty of time sending and receiving emails which can take away from the social aspect of interacting directly with people. You may also feel a lack of achievement or gratitude as your just emailing complteted work across and having no proper interaction. This can often lead to us feeling burnt out.

Our Recommendation:

Creating a list of tasks that you can cross off once completed can help not only keep track of your workflow but also give you a physical record of things you have completed that day. Giving yourself breaks after finishing a task and doing something fun or that you genuinely enjoy for a short amount of time can also help us feel rewarded. It’s also important to take advantage of down time and days off such as arranging to meet with friends or taking yourself out for the day.

Feeling Accomplished

Fancy a Thai Green Curry or a Paneer Korma?

Whilst you’re away you may be tempted into having a few takeout’s across the week. But why not have a go at making your own curry – a healthier and cheaper alternative to takeout. Curry is great as it’s not only filling, but you can also make extra so you have a few meals prepared to eat through the week. A good idea if you’re staying away for a while and don’t have the time during the week to prepare full meals for yourself.

There’s a variety of different curries to try. Why not try out this Thai green curry recipe or for vegetarians this Paneer korma. For those who are short on time or not that confident in their culinary skills these recipes may seem a little intimidating at the start but there’s always the option of buying premade curry sauces in jars or curry kits in the supermarkets. They can save a lot of time and mess if cooking from scratch isn’t an option for you!

Not Any Old Coffee But Dalgona Coffee

Chances are if you’ve been on TikTok this past year you’ve tried this out at some point. This is just one of the many recipes that the social media app sent viral during lockdown. This recipe is definitely for those who are tired of their usual morning coffee and want to do something a bit more fun, the recipe involves whipped coffee in milk. A great treat in the summer to cool down with and to get your caffeine fix.

Of course whilst there is the basic recipe to try out (which we definitely recommend to those who haven’t tried it before) we also came across this chocolate version for all you chocoholics out there. Whilst most recipes use an electric whisk, you can also whisk by hand (though it may take a little more time). You can also store any extra you make in the fridge or freezer, or some people have been spreading it on cakes too!

Who Doesn’t Love Pizza??

Another do-it-yourself takeaway classic. Making your own pizza is not only far healthier and cheaper than eating out, but it can also be a fun activity. Setting up a make your own pizza station in your accommodation is a great evening activity for families, couples or even just for yourself.

Want some inspiration for your next pizza creations? Why not check out this next level margarita pizza to upstage that takeaway.

It may have been a while since you last packed for a holiday, or maybe you’re always rushing to pack before a business trip. Either way we have some great tips for you so that you’ll have room to spare in your cases!

What you need to pack

Think about what you’ll need for your travels. If you’re going on a business trip then you will need to remember to pack any important documents, portfolios and don’t forget your best business attire. If you’re packing for your staycation don’t forget your hat and sunscreen (UK weather dependent). You may even want to pack some walking boots if you’re off to the Peak District and few other items. Once you know what you need to pack make sure that you have a case that can hold it all.

What you need to pack

Make a list

Making a list of everything you’ve just thought of and check them off as you pack, as this will ensure that you have packed it all. It’s also a good idea to check what you are being provided with by the place that you are staying at as it can mean you need to either pack a few more or less items. Don’t forget to check how close the nearest supermarket is so you can buy anything that you’ve realised you’ve forgotten once you get there!

Fold your clothes

Folding clothes a certain way can help reduce the space they take up in your bags, a great tip if you’re always struggling to close your suitcase or if some items have to left behind. Watch organising Consultant Marie Kondo show you how to fold your clothes so that you can fit more in your case here

Don’t leave it to the last minute

Easier said than done we know, but it’s a good idea to pack at least the day before so that you won’t be rushing to pack everything before your taxi arrives. But giving yourself a day to check you have everything you need means you can make any emergency trips to the shop if you find there is something missing. It also gives you piece of mind on the day of your travel that you know that you are ready to go and have everything packed.

Pack your essentials last

Leave your essentials, toiletries out so that you can use them in the morning to get ready before you travel. Make sure that a space is left for them at the top of your case so that you can place them straight in once you are done with them, so that you don’t mess up the rest of your careful packing and you can close your case straight up once they are packed

Packing for your next big trip to Derby?

There’s plenty to see and do whilst you’re in the area, with the Derby Museum, Derby Cathedral and a variety of places to eat and drink at all in the Derby City Centre. There is plenty of bus routes and taxi providers in the city, so you don’t have to worry about commuting. Still require accommodation... we’ve got you covered.

Our spacious apartments have free speedy Wi-Fi, free beverages for your work break, and free Netflix ready for you to unwind at the end of the workday. We also have our own free gated parking, so you don’t have to worry about parking tickets or finding a space nearby.

The museum area is magical to walk around in the evenings and there is also a woodland walk and a wizards and villains themed night, as well as a variety of other themed nights during the illuminations.

Derby Ghost Walk

A ghoulish night out for adults now with Derby’s New Ghost Walks led by Richard Felix from the Most Haunted. Why not tour the various haunted spots in Derby City Centre and hear the spine chilling stories behind them. Certain tours also offer supper back at the Derby Goals, so be sure to check out that as well.

Freights of Abraham

The heights of Abraham offer their own spooky event for Halloween. People search on the estate for the pebble people hidden in the gardens and woodlands. There’s also a self-guided audio ghost hunt using your mobile where you visit five locations with a spooky story to tell, suitable for those of all ages. There’s also plenty of Halloween treats at the café after you have finished all the spooky activities!

This is a Derby based small chain with a store in a grade II historic building in the Cathedral Quarter. The shop offers a relaxed and quiet atmosphere, a great place to unwind at the end of a busy day. With homemade cakes, a wide lunch selection and their own Bookcafe blend of coffee.

We recommend that you try out one the Bookcafe’s homemade cakes next time you stop by, especially their crème egg brownies along with their own branded blend of coffee.

Miss Coffee

Miss Coffee is a small café in the Derbion centre offering both hot and cold coffee, snacks and sweets, but are most well known for their bubble tea. The cafe is often busy but well worth the wait. With a wide selection of beverages and food the café is a perfect pit stop when on an afternoon shopping trip. All the drinks are highly customisable, but they do provide recommendations for those who feel a bit intimidated by the many options available!

When you visit Miss Coffee why not try their Hong Kong style Ice Coffee or a Frappuccino milky bubble drink.

Grand Café Caruso is a small Italian café located at the entrance of the Derbion shopping centre. The family run café offers a cosy atmosphere with a great selection of coffees. A great choice if you’re venturing away from chain coffee shops.
