Going into the New Year many of us have found ourselves now working from home permanently. This lifestyle change has been an easy adaptation for some but not for others, as there’s a variety of new problems to tackle in order to complete your work, and I’m not just talking about the Wi-Fi going down!

We’ve created a list of things that could be contributing to your work stress and some tips to help reduce it.

Focusing on tasks

One of the biggest hurdles to overcome during work is to focus on tasks and this becomes even more difficult at home as we are surrounded by things that can distract us. Being at home can make it very tempting to distract ourselves with other small tasks or the biggest distraction, going on our phones. Not to mention it’s easy to get distracted by laundry piling up or clutter that needs tidying up.

Our Recommendation:

Moving your phone to a different room or turning it on to airplane mode can help with being distracted by social media or any incoming messages and giving yourself a few rules to follow such as taking scheduled breaks, having set tasks to finish by the end of the day and leaving household chores until after working hours. This can also help to ensure that your surroundings are free from anything or any task that can distract you the next working day.

Focusing on tasks

Detaching from work

A problem that many of us have struggled with is switching off at the end of the work day and relaxing. Working from home means that your living space is now your office space, which can be a big problem if you have a limited amount of space, meaning it can be hard to feel like you have finished work for the day or can leave your work behind. This can contribute to being able to leave a work mindset.

Our Recommendation:

This YouTube video shows how to optimise small or limited space whilst working from home to make them feel as separated as possible. When you have finished working, having an activity or hobby to do after can also help channel your thoughts into something else. Going outside can also help to detach from work e.g. reading a book in the garden or going for a run (British weather permitting of course)!

Detaching from work

Feeling Accomplished

Feeling accomplished can be difficult when completing one task after another or when feeling overwhelmed. Working from home means plenty of time sending and receiving emails which can take away from the social aspect of interacting directly with people. You may also feel a lack of achievement or gratitude as your just emailing complteted work across and having no proper interaction. This can often lead to us feeling burnt out.

Our Recommendation:

Creating a list of tasks that you can cross off once completed can help not only keep track of your workflow but also give you a physical record of things you have completed that day. Giving yourself breaks after finishing a task and doing something fun or that you genuinely enjoy for a short amount of time can also help us feel rewarded. It’s also important to take advantage of down time and days off such as arranging to meet with friends or taking yourself out for the day.

Feeling Accomplished

It doesn’t take long to prepare either, which is perfect for when you have to get up early for a day full of business meetings!

Want to save even more time? Check out this French toast casserole recipe, prepare it the night before and just pop it in the oven in the morning whilst you get dressed for the day. No need for any mess and you get a proper breakfast to start your day.

What about something a bit extra with this French toast with apples recipe, a great chance to get one of your five a day. This recipe only takes a little more time than a traditional French toast recipe but makes all the difference in taste.

Fancy a Thai Green Curry or a Paneer Korma?

Whilst you’re away you may be tempted into having a few takeout’s across the week. But why not have a go at making your own curry – a healthier and cheaper alternative to takeout. Curry is great as it’s not only filling, but you can also make extra so you have a few meals prepared to eat through the week. A good idea if you’re staying away for a while and don’t have the time during the week to prepare full meals for yourself.

There’s a variety of different curries to try. Why not try out this Thai green curry recipe or for vegetarians this Paneer korma. For those who are short on time or not that confident in their culinary skills these recipes may seem a little intimidating at the start but there’s always the option of buying premade curry sauces in jars or curry kits in the supermarkets. They can save a lot of time and mess if cooking from scratch isn’t an option for you!

Not Any Old Coffee But Dalgona Coffee

Chances are if you’ve been on TikTok this past year you’ve tried this out at some point. This is just one of the many recipes that the social media app sent viral during lockdown. This recipe is definitely for those who are tired of their usual morning coffee and want to do something a bit more fun, the recipe involves whipped coffee in milk. A great treat in the summer to cool down with and to get your caffeine fix.

Of course whilst there is the basic recipe to try out (which we definitely recommend to those who haven’t tried it before) we also came across this chocolate version for all you chocoholics out there. Whilst most recipes use an electric whisk, you can also whisk by hand (though it may take a little more time). You can also store any extra you make in the fridge or freezer, or some people have been spreading it on cakes too!

Not Any Old Coffee But Dalgona Coffee

Who Doesn’t Love Pizza??

Another do-it-yourself takeaway classic. Making your own pizza is not only far healthier and cheaper than eating out, but it can also be a fun activity. Setting up a make your own pizza station in your accommodation is a great evening activity for families, couples or even just for yourself.

Want some inspiration for your next pizza creations? Why not check out this next level margarita pizza to upstage that takeaway.
Want to try something a bit different, then check out this creative pizza ring recipe, sure to be a show stopper at any pizza making session - not to mention delicious!

It may have been a while since you last packed for a holiday, or maybe you’re always rushing to pack before a business trip. Either way we have some great tips for you so that you’ll have room to spare in your cases!

What you need to pack

Think about what you’ll need for your travels. If you’re going on a business trip then you will need to remember to pack any important documents, portfolios and don’t forget your best business attire. If you’re packing for your staycation don’t forget your hat and sunscreen (UK weather dependent). You may even want to pack some walking boots if you’re off to the Peak District and few other items. Once you know what you need to pack make sure that you have a case that can hold it all.

What you need to pack

Make a list

Making a list of everything you’ve just thought of and check them off as you pack, as this will ensure that you have packed it all. It’s also a good idea to check what you are being provided with by the place that you are staying at as it can mean you need to either pack a few more or less items. Don’t forget to check how close the nearest supermarket is so you can buy anything that you’ve realised you’ve forgotten once you get there!

Make a list

Fold your clothes

Folding clothes a certain way can help reduce the space they take up in your bags, a great tip if you’re always struggling to close your suitcase or if some items have to left behind. Watch organising Consultant Marie Kondo show you how to fold your clothes so that you can fit more in your case here

Fold your clothes

Don’t leave it to the last minute

Easier said than done we know, but it’s a good idea to pack at least the day before so that you won’t be rushing to pack everything before your taxi arrives. But giving yourself a day to check you have everything you need means you can make any emergency trips to the shop if you find there is something missing. It also gives you piece of mind on the day of your travel that you know that you are ready to go and have everything packed.

Don’t leave it to the last minute

Pack your essentials last

Leave your essentials, toiletries out so that you can use them in the morning to get ready before you travel. Make sure that a space is left for them at the top of your case so that you can place them straight in once you are done with them, so that you don’t mess up the rest of your careful packing and you can close your case straight up once they are packed

Pack your essentials last

Travelling away for work? Got some time to spare? No worries, we’ve got some suggestions on how you can spend your down time on your next business trip

The local area

If you are going to be staying in the area for a fair bit of time do a bit of research beforehand. Learn if there are any special events on whilst your visiting - the local tourist website will have information on this. Check out the variety of recommended restaurants, pubs, bars and more whilst you are in the area and make the most of your time off!

Staying in Derby? Why not check out The Blacksmiths Lounge in Derby City Centre. A perfect venue if you want some live entertainment and cocktails.

Or maybe the family is visiting you on your weekend off and you want an activity to keep the kids entertained? Why not check out Oxygen Freejumping Trampoline Park also located in the city centre, fun for everyone of all ages and sure to give you a bit of a workout in the process.

Check out our blog on the Top 5 Local Pubs to visit and the Ultimate Staycation in Derby for some top places to visit.

The Blacksmiths Lounge

Food is fuel

If you don’t have kitchen facilities in your accommodation, you’ll probably be eating out a lot. Whilst takeaways are always an easy option at the end of a long workday, it can easily get repetitive and not to mention unhealthy. Make a list of a few restaurants in the local area to help give you some variety.

If your accommodation does provide a fully equipped kitchen then you will need to find out how far the supermarket is. It’s probably a good idea to have a few go-to-recipes that will be quick to prepare at the end of the work day.

Eating in Derby? There is a variety of Restaurants in Derby and many of them also do takeaway since the pandemic started. If eating out isn’t your thing, Pride Apartments provides full kitchen facilities so you can cook up a storm in your free time! There are also supermarkets located within walking distance if you need any last-minute ingredients.

Time to catch up

One of the best things about travelling for work is the chance to catch up with friends. Whether it be friends who conveniently live in the area or maybe you and your friend from work were lucky enough to take a business trip together, don’t miss the opportunity to make some memories together.

You may want to check out some potential venues for your next get together. TripAdvisor is always a great go to when you don’t know where to head to, but if your friends are local don’t forget to ask them if they know any hidden treasures in the area.

Getting together in Derby? Derby City Centre provides a variety of places to go to. Whether you want to do some touring in the day, a scrumptious meal or a late-night drink, there’s a selection places for any occasion. You can check out some of our favourite spots in our previous blog or you can check out other people’s recommendations through TripAdvisor.

Time to catch up

Everything and the kitchen sink

It’s needless to say make sure you’ve packed everything you need. If you’re staying for an extended period of time and there are no laundry facilities, you’ll want to make sure you bring a bit of extra change to go to the nearest Laundromat (and double check there is one nearby). Don’t forget to keep your receipts to claim back your expenses during your trip.

It is not just extra expenses you need to think about. Clothes, toiletries, home comforts … there’s more you’ll need to take with you than things you need for work.

Also check what your accommodation will provide for you.

The Peak District has provided a splendid selection of walks that allow you to enjoy some great scenery with their Hope Valley station Walks. Their walking guides help you to explore a variety of the natural beauty on offer in the peak district, a perfect day for nature lovers or those who are tired of being cooped up inside this past year.

We recommend The Ladybower walk as it’s one of the easiest and offers a beautiful view of the reservoir, making it a great place to stop and admire the view or even have a picnic. The walk takes 1 – 3 hours and is 4.6 miles long. For those of you who are up for more of a challenge check out some of the other walks planned.

The train to the start of the Hope Valley station walks take about an hour depending on which you’re planning on tackling.

Trains to Trams

Our top pick for a family day out is Crich Tramway Museum. A short distance from the Whatstandwell train station, the museum offers a great day out with lots to see and do.

From riding trams to a restored street with shops and a pub along with a museum of trams, the tramway museum is sure to provide an unforgettable day out. It’s sure to entertain kids and also runs events and themed weekends, so be sure to check their events calendar before you go so you don’t miss out.

Crich Village also has a wonderful array of shops, restaurants and cafés to visit, along with other sights nearby, such as the Crich Stand War memorial.

The average journey time by train between Derby and Whatstandwell is 22 minutes, with around 17 trains per day.

What should you be on the look out for when securing the best accommodation possible for when you’re working away?

Location, Location, Location

Obviously when travelling for work you already know where you are heading, but you need to consider your accommodation location too. Ideally you want to be not too far from where you will be having any meetings, or not far from your temporary workplace, so you do not have to worry about travel time. It is always a good idea to double check your nearest public transport links, train frequency and taxi availability in the area too.

Nearby facilities

If you are planning on staying for an extended period of time do not forget to check how close the supermarket is!

Make sure you keep a copy of your receipts if you claim back expenses. Saves you racking your brain a few weeks later when Dave in accounts is demanding to know why you spent £8.42 at the Sainsburys in Derby. Oh and don’t take the biscuit, if you’re eating out on the company then don’t take liberties. Check what is and isn’t allowed.

Work hard, play hard

Do not forget it’s not all about work, make sure the place is suitable for relaxing too, perhaps with nearby restaurants, bars or somewhere to take a quiet walk. Make sure you take care of your work life balance as well!

Also, don’t forget to also check current government guidelines before you travel.

Need space

When comparing accommodation options, consider how much space you require. If you’re going to be working in your accommodation as well as living in it, you may have a few extra things to consider, as we have all learnt from working from home this last year.

Having enough space for a workstation might be essential when you take your next trip, so that you have enough space to stay organised and can also walk away and take a break from the work area. If you require Wi-Fi, it might be worth checking reviews to see if people have mentioned the quality or signal strength.

Workspace

Onsite facilities

It’s not just workstation facilities you may need to consider if you’re planning on a long stay away for work. Unless your bags can fit 2 weeks of clothing in them, you are going to need some laundry facilities. Not to mention Kitchen facilities, as eating out regularly can be pretty expensive as well as unhealthy.

Also, just because you’re working away from home it doesn’t mean you should have to miss your latest Netflix series. So if continuing with your series is a must make sure you check the facilities available at the accommodation you’re staying at.

Car parking availability

If you’re driving or have a van with tools you’ll definitely want some secure car parking. You also need to consider your budget for this or whether the accommodation provides this free of charge as it’s likely to be more costly if you’re staying within the city centre.

Look around the town

It’s important to check what is nearby. Going to your place of work and then coming back to your accommodation or working and staying in the same place can become monotonous and tiring. You need to realise that there are places outside of work and your accommodation to explore. Check out any local events, or local parks, gardens, and other recreational areas that you can hit up.

Working away

Working away in Derby?

There’s plenty to see whilst you’re in the area, with the Derby Museum, Derby Cathedral and a variety of places to eat and drink (check out some of our previous blog posts where we’ve covered this).
