Create a Routine
You’ve probably already heard this one but creating a routine can really help you focus on your work. But how do you create a routine? It’s not just about the hours you are working, what you do before and after is part of your routine as well. Having a routine can also help keep track of the days, something we are all struggling with in lockdown.
Before starting your work give yourself some activities to do e.g. yoga, making a cup of coffee, making the most important meal of the day - breakfast. A pre-work routine will make it much easier to get in the zone whilst you are working remotely.
During work hours, writing a schedule for yourself can help you stay on track and monitor your progress. Writing a list of tasks that needs to be done for the day and times they should be started or completed can help you feel more organised and make sure you’re getting tasks finished on time. It is also important to include breaks in your schedule.
Take A Break
Let’s talk more about taking breaks. Including them in your schedule helps to avoid work fatigue and feeling overwhelmed. Scheduled breaks can also be used to motivate you and give you something to work towards, as well as to help break up the work day.
During your break make sure to move around and stretch, you have been sitting in the same place for a while after all. Make sure to stay hydrated too, and not just on the coffee! This all contributes to your physical health and mental wellbeing. It also keeps you refreshed when you go back to your work, as well avoid headaches, repetitive strains or other work-related health issues.
When you’re working in the same place that you are living, it can be difficult to turn off. The best way to avoid overwhelming yourself with work is to create a dedicated workspace. This helps your mind to focus by understanding that when you are in your workspace you need to focus on your work and be productive.
This is easier at your actual workspace in the office as you already have a dedicated workspace and location, so if you’re not as productive at home than as at work, this could be part of why. Try to recreate a workspace for yourself, this may mean revamping a small area of your home and buying a few work from home essentials. Dressing for work might help you feel more in the work mood, as well as be ready for any impromptu zoom calls!
